Adverbs



An adverb tells more about the verb in a sentence.

An adverb can tell how, when, or where.

→The sun is shining brightly.

Adverbs tell when, where, or how the action takes place.

Types of adverbs:

  1. Adverbs of manner: Adverbs of manner tell us how things are done. Ask the question ‘how’ after the verb. The answer will be an Adverb of Manner.

Some adverbs end with ‘ly’. Eg. loudly, cheerfully, quickly, impolitely, hurriedly, noisily

How → The flag flaps softly in the wind.

         → The lion runs quickly.

  1. Adverbs of Place: Adverbs of place tell us where actions take place. Ask the question ‘where’ after the verb. The answer will be an Adverb of place.

E.g. inside, outside, here, there, everywhere ……

Where → the flag flies high.

             →We played inside.

  1. Adverbs of Time: Adverbs of time tell us when actions take place. Ask the question ‘when’ after the verb. The answer will be an Adverb of Time. g. today, yesterday, tomorrow, soon, now, late……

When → We raised the flag early.

            Now I read my book.
