Prepositions



Prepositions are place\ Positions words.

Prepositions help to show movement and direction.

Prepositions are always followed by nouns\ pronouns. The noun or pronoun following the preposition is called the object of the preposition.

   

Examples of prepositions: in, at, on, up, to, for, with, near, from  behind, near, beside, in front of, next, between, among, under,    inside, outside…..                               

      Prepositions are used in time phrases.

Read the time phrases given below.

at ten o’clock, at 10:00 am; at night; at lunchtime; in March;

in March; in 2014; in the evening; in the morning; in the afternoon;

 in summer; on Sunday; on 17th February; on my birthday.

Use the preposition:

  1. in: You live in a city ?town ?a house ?an apartment; You sit in an arm chair ? a bus ? a train? an airplane ? a classroom etc. You fly in an airplane.
  2. on: the mattress is on the bed. Dad stood on a stool to hang a picture on the wall.
  3. at: The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom lives at 10 Downing Street in London.
  4. Other prepositions that show place and position are:

Belayneh sits behind Nigist in class. I sit beside her. Hiwot sits in front of the teacher’s desk.

John sits between Nigist and Dinknesh. Mena sits next to Nardos.

A big black raven sat among the pigeons on the roof. My Dad works at the bank opposite our school.

There is a rubber lying under my desk.

My lunch box is inside my bag. The garbage bin is outside the kitchen door.

Most prepositions of place and position also show movement and direction depending on the verbs used.

Example: The ball is under the chair. Here “under” shows where the ball is: Preposition of Place

                 The ball rolled under the chair. Here “under” is a preposition of movement and direction, because the ball moved or rolled in that direction to that place.

       Prepositions are used in time phrases.

He will be here in a few minutes.

I shall be there in an hour.

The bell rang in the middle of the night.
